LeRoi Moore of Dave Matthews Band Dead 1961-2008 (Photos)

LeRoi Moore, 46, died of complications from an ATV accident that occurred on June 30, 2008. Moore was driving a four wheel all terrain vehicle on his farm in Charlottesville, Virginia when he crashed, breaking ribs and puncturing a lung. He spent a few days in the hospital and was released.

In mid July Moore suffered complications, attributed to the accident, and was hospitalized again. He died on August 19, 2008, a few weeks shy of his 47th birthday.

The talented musician played bass, baritone, alto and soprano sax, flute, bass clarinet and wood penny whistle for the Dave Matthews Band. The bands website posted the following statement:

“We are deeply saddened that LeRoi Moore, saxophonist and founding member of Dave Matthews Band died unexpectedly Tuesday afternoon, August 19, 2008 at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center in Los Angeles from sudden complications stemming from his June ATV accident. LeRoi had recently returned to his Los Angeles home to begin an intensive physical rehabilitation program.”

Carl Yastrzemski, 68, has been admitted to Boston’s Massachusetts General Hospital after experiencing chest pains. According to his spokesman, Dick Gordon, “Any time you are in the hospital, it’s got to be pretty serious.”

The popular Yaz was an All-Star a total of 18 times and spent his entire career in Boston from 1961 to 1983, taking over left field for baseball great Ted Williams. Carl helped to revitalize the franchise during the ‘Impossible Dream’ season of 1967. He led the team to their first pennant since 1946 thought they lost the World Series to St. Louis in Game 7.

His trademark way of holding the bat high over his head is legend and imitated by many kids. The baseball great was elected to the Hall on the first ballot in 1989. The media shy athlete rarely makes public appearances but did throw out the first ball in the first game of the 2007 World Series, while flanked by his 1967 teammates - as seen in the photo at the top of this post.

Yaz, No. 8, is one of five former Red Sox sluggers to have his number painted on the wall at Fenway Park. Others include Ted Williams, Carlton Fisk, Bobby Doerr and Joe Cronin.

Spain’s Synchronized Swimmers Controversy (Photos)

One of Spain’s synchronized swimming teams was banned from competition because they deviated from the Olympic rules when they wore embedded waterproof lights. It seems the Spaniards wanted to call attention to their body of work by adding some extra sparkle and flare.

Team members, Andrea Fuentes and Gemma Mengual thought they could bring the judges around to their artistic costume choice but it didn’t work out in their favor. Fuentes had this to say about their decision to buck tradition and go for some real candle power:

“It got very sophisticated because obviously the battery doesn’t last long and then we had to look at circuits and interrupters, so we have been working on it around two months with a crack team. It looks a bit like Christmas lights. This is a very conservative sport…their excuse is that you cannot have accessories on your swimsuit, but the lights were sewn in. If you use those standards, sequins are a type of accessory”.

The pair were favored to medal in Beijing. Bummer.

Dawn Harper, 24, took the gold in the Women’s 100 meter hurdles final in Beijing on August 19, 2008. The strong field of women hurdlers included Damu Cherry and favorite Lolo Jones, who faltered, opening the door for Harper to leap through.

This was Harper’s Olympic debut. She is coached by Bob Kersee, husband and former coach of Jackie Joyner-Kersee. Both women hail from East St. Louis, Illinois.

Damu Cherry took 4th place and Lolo Jones came in 7th.

Olympic US Hurdler Lolo Jones Poised For Gold Medal Win (Photos)

Lori ‘Lolo’ Jones is an American track and field athlete who has won a world championship and two American titles in hurdles competition. She won three NCAA titles during her stellar career at LSU.

The LSU hurdler fell near the end of her 2004 qualifying race and the stumble cost her a spot at the Athens Games. Lolo, a former state champion sprinter and hurdler from Des Moines, Iowa, had a breakthrough year in 2006 and won her first national title in 2007.

Lolo was peaking at the right time, having earned her spot of the 2008 U.S. team with the fastest time in the world during the qualifying finals. The 100 meter hurdles finals were Tuesday night in the magnificent Bird’s Nest Stadium. She went up against two other U.S. team members: Damu Cherry and Dawn Harper.

Lolo’s roots are a mix of Norwegian, French, German, Irish, American Indian and African American. She tells people she is black and white. The 26 year old is from a family of six children who were at one time homeless and living in a church basement while their father was in jail.

Jones believed that winning a gold medal at Beijing would be a life changing experience for her. It would have surely establish the athlete as the new face of the sport, like her predecessors Florence Griffith-Joyner, Gail Devers and Marion Jones. Her goal, though, is simpler:

“I’ve been watching the Olympics since I was a little kid, and honestly, I would just like to inspire someone out there. Our sport has been thrown in the garbage the last couple of years, with drugs and the attitude of some athletes. I know I can reach somebody and I just want to do it in a positive way.”

Christina Applegate Will Have Best Breasts in the Nursing Home

Samantha Who? star Christina Applegate received great news after having a double mastectomy. The 36 year old actress is now totally free of cancer.

Applegate took the opportunity on Good Morning America to tell the world that she is “clean and clear” of cancer. Christina was diagnosed earlier this summer with early stage breast cancer and because she quickly sought treatment, all is going to be OK.

“Sometimes I cry, sometimes I scream, it’s all part of healing…it’s OK to cry, it’s OK to fall on the ground and just scream if you want to.”

Not letting the mastectomy get her down, Christina will undergo reconstructive surgery in the next 8 months and is keeping a great attitude.

“I am going to have cute boobs until I am 90. I am going to have the best boobs in the nursing home.”

Applegate is the daughter of a breast cancer survivor and was smart enough to start getting checked regularly since turning 30. The blow didn’t come any easier for her.

We will all have an opportunity to support Christina and those who are currently dealing with breast cancer, as well as honor those who have lost their battle, on September 5th when NBC, ABC and CBS will air Stand Up to Cancer.

Kathie Lee Gifford: Fried Hair and Frozen Face (Photos)

Kathie Lee Gifford was photographed leaving The Ivy on Robertson Boulevard in Hollywood on Monday. She was courting a fashion disaster with a dress that looked like a throwback to Wilma Flintstone or Betty Rubble. Her knobby knees and bony legs didn’t quite give her the look she might have been trying to attain.

What has happened to Kathie Lee’s hair? It looks fried. Her face is also stiff - as if she can barely coax her mouth into a smile. Botox has been used by most aging celebrities to temporarily deal with those nasty wrinkles but it also does a job on facial movement. Too bad because Gifford used to have a very expressive face before she resorted to either temporary fixes or to a full face lift - shades of Kenny Rogers as seen in our photo gallery below.

Gifford is 55 years old and has resurrected her television career by joining The Today Show on NBC in March 2008. She and Hoda Kodb are co-hosts of the fourth hour of the program. Gifford spent 15 years on the popular morning talk show Regis and Kathie Lee before stepping away for the past 8 years.

Christie Brinkley graces the cover of New York Magazine’s August 25th issue. She shares the double cover with Spanish pro tennis player Rafael Nadal.

Brinkley divorced her fourth husband, Peter Cook, earlier this summer. The proceedings became a public spectacle that ultimately ended in a back room negotiation that gave Brinkley primary custody of their children and control of 18 properties that were being contested. Cook reportedly received a payment of $2.1 million with unspecified visitation rights.

Nadal is currently ranked No. 1 in the world after winning a gold medal at the Beijing Olympics on Monday, beating Chili’s Fernando Gonzalez. Couple that with five Grand Slam singles titles under his belt, he’s definitely on a roll, having won the last four French Open titles as well as Wimbledon in 2008.
