Magic Johnson Faked AIDS Say KTLK 100.3 Radio Jocks

Magic and Cookie in October 2008

Chris Baker and Langdon Perry, on their KTLK 100.3 radio show in Minneapolis yesterday, said that they are convinced that the former Los Angeles Lakers star Magic Johnson faked AIDS.

While on the air yesterday the conversation went like this:

PERRY:  What about diseases that are eminently treatable and you can live with for a long, long time quite happily if you just get some basic drugs?

BAKER: Like Magic Johnson.

PERRY: Like Magic with his fake AIDS.

BAKER: You think Magic faked AIDS for sympathy?

PERRY: I’m convinced that Magic faked AIDS.

BAKER: Yeah, me too.

PERRY: ‘Cause he’s the only cured AIDS guy ever.

Michael Rand of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, overheard the exchange and decided to contact the former NBA great to get Magic’s reaction.  Johnson said:

“I am extremely disappointed in KTLK in Minneapolis.  I am outraged that Chris Baker and Langdon Perry would minimize such a serious and deadly issue.  Millions are dying of HIV/AIDS and the fact that they would make jokes about my status is unbelievable.  Chris, Langdon and KTLK should use their power in a more positive light by encouraging people to get tested for this disease instead of making up such ridiculous lies.”

The 49 year old Johnson was diagnosed with AIDS in 1991.  He was inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame in 2002 and was named Greatest Point Guard of All Time by ESPN in 2007.  Magic and his wife Cookie have a son Earvin III and a daughter Elisa.

Something tells us this might not be the end of the story….

  1. You say that Johnson was diagnosed with AIDS in 1991, but actually he was diagnosed as HIV positive. HIV is the virus that causes AIDS, but they are not synonymous, and with testing, early detection, and vigilant medical treatment, lots of people are living long, relatively healthy lives with HIV.

Don’t feel too bad, though: USA Today made the same mistake.

  2. I have always wondered about this. Magic fathered two children after the diagnosis that were presumably conceived in the traditional way. What woman would have unprotected sex with someone who had been diagnosed as HIV positive?

  3. Nicola,
You are making a big deal about nothing. In truth HIV is not highly transmissible. In a study done by a team reputable researchers and based in Haiti of 800 couples, one HIV positive, one HIV negative, regularly engaged in none protected sex, after eight years only 36 of the HIV negative partners tested positive for HIV. Beyond that HIV is not the sole catalyst for aids. Even if the virologists would have you believe so. It is a convenient target because as a virus it is impossible to isolate or find a cure for. The virus takes on a different genetic form in virtually every recipient. Finding a cure for HIV would be like finding a single cure for every mental disorder. The impossibility of such a cure insures billions of dollars a year in funding ad nauseum. Besides, Cookie was inseminated for their last two children. Sperm doesn’t carry the virus. Blood does.
As for Chris and Langdon, you guys are way too typical of the media, strongly opinionated without any real knowledge of what you are talking about. Their are many people who were diagnosed HIV positive BEFORE Magic Johnson who are alive and well today, though they ARE a distinct minority. Try getting your facts straight BEFORE shooting your mouths off. Your radio show would be distinctly shorter, to the benefit of the entire human race.

    Dr. Akbari
