Ingrid Marie Rivera was one of 29 contestants vying for the title of “Miss Puerto Rico”. She won the crown despite having several of her pageant gowns doused in pepper spray. Did we mention there was also a bomb threat. It seems dangerous to be vying for a crown if you hail from Puerto Rico.

Rivera had a severe reaction to the pepper spray and raced backstage to apply ice to her body and face. Officials thought that she was having an allergic reaction or hives. It happened a second time with a different gown – leading to the discovery. To add to her woes, her purse, makeup and clothing were stolen.

It would seem that someone didn’t want Rivera to win the crown. There had been complaints during the week – with many feeling that Rivera was too experienced and should therefore be disqualified. She had previously reigned as Miss World Caribbean 2005. She was also said to be a media favorite coming into the competition.

The bomb threat caused pageant officials to wrap things up a day early. They have decided to keep the investigation ‘in house’ – opting not to involve local police authorities.

Hopefully Miss Puerto Rico will have a security detail to protect her when she hits her next pageant gig – the Miss Universe pageant.
